Turtle in Mediterranean

It means south part of Europa, North Africa and east coast of Asia. This land is typical for subtropic temperature. There are warm sommer and colder rainy winter. That`s a why majority of turtle is active in spring and autumn and in winter majority of them sleep. There live mainly land turtles (Testudo Hermanni, T. Graeca, etc). Vegetation here is dry and thorny. It`s for turtles the best biotop, it contain enough food, hiding places and place for nest.

The differences among spieces are only little and identify ones from other is very difficult, for example T. hermanni have device tablet above the tail and T. graeca haven`t. T. hermanni lives only in Europa while T. graeca live in north Africa and east Asia too. In this region lives even two spieces land turtles. In south Greece live Testudo marginata on peninsula Peloponés. It`s the biggest turtle in Europa, they are 30cm long. In Egypt, Libie and Izrael live on the other hand smallest turtle T. Kleinmanni. Adult female are only 15cm long. They live in desert that`s a why they are active only one or two hour per day.

A diet land turtle in Europa is from 90% plant, but they eat meat too.

Besides land turtle live in Europa three speaces aquatic turtle- Emys orbicularis, Maremis caspica and Mauremis leprosa. Emys orbicularis lives in north Germany, it`s norther places than Czek republic. It`s only speaces who live in past in Czech republic. Aquatic turtles eat much more meat than land turtles. Aquatic turtles are more tolerant on low temperature than land turtles.

Last aquatic turtle who live in Europa is Trachemys scripta elegans. These spieces spring from America especially in Florida. T. Scripta elegans is import to Europa in big number than escape their breeder and make proper population because i n America live in same biotop.

She occuping places good for Emys orbicularis.
